Be a sport and get to the ballet for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year. It is a day where people say “I love you” and some ask, “will you marry me?” and it is the same all over the world. This year Cape Town has the absolute ultimate in romance taking place from 22nd January until 26th February that couple will enjoy.

Originally published as a tragedy in 1597 Romeo and Juliet is the epitome of Romance all over the world. This Shakespeare classic tells the immortal and tragic story of two star-crossed lovers who die because of their love. The Montague and the Capulet families are on opposing sides of a bitter and violent blood feud and Romeo and Juliet are caught in the middle of it all. Every time a member of one family is killed, so the other takes revenge and the love between Romeo and Juliet does not stand a chance. If Romeo is ever found to be with his Juliet, he will be killed and so the ultimate in romance and tragedy plays out. The play ends with Juliet taking a sleeping potion and is believed to be dead and she is buried in a crypt. Romeo cannot face the world without his love and poisons himself just as Juliet awakes. With love so deep, Juliet takes a dagger and stabs herself in the heart, as she too cannot live without her love.

A powerful and beautiful story of love that ends with immortal words “for never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo” the play is now also a ballet. The story was turned into a ballet in 1935, conceived by Adrian Piotovsky and Sergey Radlov with a now world famous musical score composed by Sergei Prokofiev. The ballet has been performed countless times around the world with performances that have amazed audiences young and old. Romeo and Juliet as a ballet must surely be the romantic of all ballets and perfect for Valentine’s month in Cape Town.

To make Romeo Juliet more romantic still the Cape Town City Ballet is performing it at the Maynardville Open Air Theatre in Wynberg.
